5-year-old Ohio girl with rare genetic condition to complete ‘visual bucket list’ before going blind

News

Lizzy Myers will visit the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls to complete her “visual bucket list.” A loving family is doing all they can to help their daughter see the world before her imminent blindness. Elizabeth Myers, 5, was diagnosed with Ushers Syndrome Type II, a rare genetic condition, which causes a person’s vision and hearing to deteriorate. Her parents first noticed something was wrong after their little girl began experiencing bilateral hearing loss. Lizzy’s doctor tested her for seven common types of hearing loss — all of which came back negative. The family initially decided against further testing, but coaxing from the family doctor inspired a change of heart. “If they hadn’t pushed us for the genetic testing we would never have known what’s to come for Lizzy,” the father, Steve, told the Mansfield News Journal . “Then it would have been too late.” Now the Myers are on a mission to make sure Lizzy sees all the beauty in the world for herself. “About five to seven years is our window to get her out and about to see things, especially at night,” the father, Steve said of the family’s “visual bucket list” plan. Lizzy Myers, 5, was able to view the moon, Saturn and a few stars during her recent trip to Warren Rupp Observatory. The stop was one of many on her “visual bucket list” before Ushers Syndrome threathens her eyesight. The family ticked one activity off the list Tuesday night at the Warren Rupp Observatory in their hometown of Bellville. There, Lizzy had a chance to view the moon, Saturn, and the stars through a telescope courtesy of the Richland Astronomical Society. “It was big, giant, round,” Lizzy said of the moon. The tiny astronomer provided even more details of the bright light in the sky. “I see it, I see it,” she said. “It looks like an oval that’s all colored all in.” Lizzy, who isn’t aware of her condition yet, has an enviable lineup of attractions ahead including trips to see the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Northern Lights, and Yellowstone Park.
